Music Therapy in primary schools
Improving children’s emotional well-being

As reported in the Spring edition...
1 in 6 children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem, and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement. Department of Health and Social Care.

Following a most productive meeting, in-person, with the SENCO at a primary school in Waterlooville, Hampshire, we are pleased to be providing a pilot project there this half term, working with 2 children who have been referred as needing particular emotional support.

Music Therapy is complementing an already strong music provision in the school. There is an impressive new music cabin, stocked with new instruments - recently opened by the Bishop of Portsmouth!

Thanks to the school for welcoming Key Changes.
We look forward to continuing the work there in September.

Further pilots are available.
If your mainstream primary school is interested, please contact enquiries@keychanges.org

Proposal to CUT Music Therapy training course

As a Music Therapy provider, we are very keen for our supporters to be made aware of the proposed cutting of the well established music therapy Masters course at Roehampton University.

Over half the music therapists on the Key Changes team were trained on this highly regarded course, including Beccy Read, co-ordinator.

At a time when Music Therapy is increasingly recognised as a powerful tool to help alleviate growing mental health needs and improve the well-being of those of all ages who are struggling emotionally, cutting such a vital training course is at best a backwards step.

Trustee news

In April, our newly retired trustee, Nial Dunne, recieved a Community Award from Winchester's Mayor.
We are very grateful to Nial for his support in his volunteering role with Key Changes over the past 9 years, both as a fundraiser and as a trustee. He was a vital part in helping maintain our therapy work and raising awareness of Music Therapy.

Thank you, Nial & Congratulations on your award!

Fundraising thanks:

On 11th June, Beccy Read, co-ordinator & Jim Squire, chair of trustees, represented Key Changes at Alverstoke Church for Portsmouth Choral Union's HMS Pinafore G & S performance.
Aswell as being a Come and Sing choral event for the choir, it was a Key Changes fundraiser.

Beccy: "We really enjoyed the event and meeting so many of you, and, as I think I said, I'm not too much a G & S fan, but your engaging performance helped to convert me! You all seemed to be enjoying it so much, it really came across. You've got some great singers there - it seemed Pinafore was written specially for your choir!"

Donations taken at the event came to £240.90, and we look forward to more to come.

Thank you, Portsmouth Choral Union!
